Street Preacher

Here in Logan, we have a famous Street Preacher to our city. He stands on the corner of 10th and Main rain or snow and preaches about how we are all going to hell. The funny part is you would think that he is crazy, but when you talk to him, he acts completely normal and can have a full converstion. Well for the last month or so he has not been there. A lot of people have wondered why. Well I just read in the paper that he was arrested on a minor traffic violation and that he is in jail for thirty days. The most interesting part of the story is that they found out that he is actually an illegal alien and now when he finishes his jail stay he will probably be deported. How about that for bringing the immigration issue to your door step?

Loss of Street Cred

You thought the last video was laughable, this is the moment when Bone Thugs lost their street cred. I spent 2 years in the area and about 8 months in the city where these guys grew up....

Many might think that Phil is trying to act hard in this video...I don't give him that much "cred." I think he is just realizing how stupid he was for being in this video.

Lost

So. I can't believe that neither Nate or I have dedicated part of our blogging site to our favorite show on the face of the earth. LOST. Nate and I began our Lost journey a couple of months ago. We watched the first 3 seasons in probably a month and a half. I guess that's what poor people who are newleyweds do in their spare time. Now - since we're all caught up - we have to be tortured into watching it only ONCE a week. only one episode - once a week. It sucks a lot. So I just want to take this moment to try to convince EVERYONE that they should become addicted to this show like we are. I just wish we could fast forward and just watch every single part of it. I don't know what we're going to do when we have to go like 2 months without seeing a new episode. If you have any questions about Lost, or like to read up on it - here are some good websites I've found for the addicted Lost watcher.

www.lost-theories.com

ABC Lost Theories - http://forums.abc.com/n/pfx/forum.aspx?webtag=lost

Just a couple - but google LOST theories - and you will find thousands.

Just looking at the theories should occupy enough of your time. Enjoy!

COOL SLICE OF MARS

MARS

If you scroll on this picture down to where the blueish sand dunes end there is a huge cliff. It is really cool! From the picture taken thousands of miles out, and seeing a shadow like that,I'm sure it is really big.

Finals Are Upon Us!

I for one do not have the sickness too bad, but this example tells how some people feel. CLICK ON THE LINK BELOW!
I am in the library right now. I just finished studying for a test I have today. I got up from the computer to find a comfy place to read David McCullough's "John Adams." I highly recomend this book. Since it is sunny I wanted to find a place where the warmth of the sunlight would nestle on my face as I read the inspiring stories of a man so influential to the success of our country. I just thought I would try to write a corny descriptive sentence there, and I think I succeeded. Anyways, I walked down one of the offshoots and I get to the end, and a kid is sitting on a couch in front of me looking at a laptop with his back turned. He did not know that I was there and suddenly he throws the top half of his body to the right and slams his face into the couch in pure frustration. I started to laugh and with his head still down on the couch I said, "Fiiiinaaaaalssssss!" I said it in the same tone that one might say....nee ner nee ner neeeee ner! When Karma goes full circle next semester and I am sitting on the couch and have the urge to slam my face into the couch, I won't fight it. I will just let nature take its course.

A couple pictures for you!

This one is for you Bob. You bought Dianna her very own Reese's Puffs cereal, at least that is what she thought, which I did not know and I ended up eating most of it. She got mad, so I told her that she should buy her own box. This is what she came home with.

This is my garden. It will be just a few plants for the first year, considering it will be on my back porch.

Flying Story And Another Story

So as far as flying goes, we did not go flying. When I arrived, there were some dark clouds. The radar returns were inconclusive. As I did the preflight, we realized that is was probably not going to happen. We were out there for about 15 minutes and then I went back in to check the radar, and it was conclusive. By that time so were we, so the radar was useless. Last time I checked the radar was supposed to let you know that storms were coming before they came. The interesting thing is that there were about four other planes looking to go up and we all decided it was a no go. Right about that time a Cessna took off, not one of our school's, and we couldn't believe what we were seeing. He was definitely fighting the wind as he climbed he was turned into the wind so the plane was about a 45 degree angle to the left of the runway. Then to top it off the plane turned directly into the storm and flew west. I don't know what they were thinking, but I hope that they are ok tonight. See the thing is, is that when these storms come and it is freezing, even when it is above freezing on the ground the temp. drops quickly, then precipitation will hit your wing and form ice. This in turn ruins the shape of your wing and then....no lift = you go down. So it is pretty serious.
The next story is not related at all. Today Dianna and I were going through some old photos on our computer, and she came across some from my first year at USU. There was a picture of a girl that lived across from me and her dad. I started laughing because this guy thought that we were all the stereotypical broke college students. I don't know if we have more money than in the past relatively, or if we are just less frugal, but we did not live all that conservative. So this guy lived in New Hampshire and he came to visit his daughter. He stayed in a hotel, and one day after he showed up in the morning, he had a big white garbage bag of stuff. We wondered what it was. He gave it to me and said, "I have been saving these at the hotel for you." I looked inside and he had put all the little soaps and shampoos in the bag so we could have them. We all got a good kick out of it. It was nice of him to think of us though.

School School School.....

In all honesty, I do really like school. I'm thankful that I get to go to college and learn, because I know that like 90% of the world doesn't ever get that opportunity. But sometimes it's just hard. I'm a really bad test taker, and really bad at math, so when those two things go hand in hand, it's hard to be good at your math class. I try to understand but all the numbers and signs and symbols all get jumbled up inside my head and I can't ever seem to clear it up. I just need to lock myself in a room with nothing else in the room except for my math book and math notes and just study. jeeezz....on that note - I should probably do that now instead of blog on the internet. I just needed a little venting time. Thank ya!

Jazz is in my mind! And after publishing there is more in my mind...

So what am I thinking about today? How awesome the Utah Jazz are of course. So here is the deal. They have the best home record in the league. They arguably have the worst road record among the teams in the playoffs. We beat Houston tonight, if the playoffs started now as of tonight we would play Houston in the first round and have home court advantage. We have the same record, but we beat them more this year so we have the advantage. We have one more game on the season though against San Antonio which we are trailing by one game. If we beat them then we would have third place and also get home court against them. They would be our first round match up. The problem with our one remaining game, is it is in San Antonio and the Jazz have not won there in nine years. If we lose we would also lose our advantage on Houston so we would start the playoffs in Houston but they would have the home court advantage. So for those of you that don't like sports, or maybe just don't care for the NBA the easy way to say it, is that there are a lot of things that can happen in two days and it is intense but we could really use home court advantage because of the whole we are best at home and probably worst on the road. There now I got it all out and we will see what happens.
As far as school, it is not on my mind. I could not stand being there today with it being 70 outside. I was so restless within 10 minutes of my school day. Physics was about waves, which is less exciting than some of the things we have learned, and Human Factors was good because we learned about the importance of display/control integration inside the cockpit but....it was 70 dang it. So add the great weather to the following quote. This quote describes how I feel about college anyways. It seems robotic and I already have all the games down how to get an A and the professors have given up and hand out A's at the rate my tax money is spent on Earmarks, that means a lot. I swear to you, I learn more on a daily basis through my own curiosities than I do in any given week in college.

"It's almost a miracle that modern teaching methods have not yet entirely strangled the holy curiosity of inquiry."

-Albert Einstein

I have been worried about my future career path with Aloha, ATA, Skybus, and Frontier all filing bankruptcy this month. The Delta/Northwest merge will also not help with the pilot situation. Instructors here are already talking about making sure they have instructing jobs for the long haul which will back up the system for those of us looking to graduate in the next yearish time. Needless to say my little inkling of consideration for law school is growing by the hour. Now I am pretty convinced I will go ahead with it because this whole airline, economy thing is a joke.
Also the 123teachme.com link I put up, I also found out it is the Spanish they speak in Spain not Mexico, so that probably won't help me too much on the home front so I'm going to bag that one.

And let's not forget the Youtube obsession today....

Long Time, No See

Helloooo everyone! I know...it's been awhile since you've heard from me. But don't worry - I'm still around. I just had a pretty busy past couple of days but I thought I could take a few minutes on this wonderful, relaxing Sunday morning. My dad's in town! So that's really fun. Last night Nate and I deserted him for a few hours and left him to go to a party with some people here in Logan who he knows from Iowa. So that was fun for him, and fun for us! Jazz games are great - I love going. I really really really want a Jazz jersey but Nate says I can't get one until I watch games even when I'm just by myself at home. Help me convince him to get me one guys! Because I'm so busy that I'm hardly home when the Jazz are playing on TV.
Yesterday I went with my dad up to Bear Lake because he and his wife, Cheryl, are looking into buying a summer cabin up there. That would be fun, huh?! We also went grocery shopping and out to lunch/dinner with Nate at Firehouse. Yum!
It's always great when my dad comes to town. He lives super far away (Iowa) so I hardly ever get to see him (sad!). But hopefully Nate and I can get him hooked on this blogging thing and we'll all be able to keep in touch better.
Other than my busy life - thing's are going great! It's finally getting warm, school's almost over (for this semester anyway) and summer will soon be here!
Happy Sabbath Everyone!

Democrats Get What They Want

Of course, they could have been paying more in taxes all along; the IRS won't jail you for slipping them an extra five or ten grand. Oddly enough, most liberals engage in the same tax-minimization behavior as people who proclaim their distaste for taxes.

-Credit ACE

Nate

But perhaps it wasn't explicit enough that liberals were permitted to give more of their hard-earned pay to the state than the minimum demanded; or perhaps it wasn't convenient enough to do so.

A new bill just introduced -- The Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is Bill (seriously, that's the unofficial name) -- will help our despondent liberal friends pay that additional 10% tithe (or more) to the StateChurch that they've always wanted to pay but just didn't see what box to enter their bonus largesse into.

Tribute to Justin!

I found a song that reminds me of Justin. He would be so happy to know I was listening to this without him while he is pounding it out in Oakland. He introduced me to this group and more importantly the song, so have a listen. It fits his personality perfect. Click on the song I was born (a unicorn)-The Unicorns over on the playlist!

UPDATE:Both of The Unicorns songs are for him!

UPDATE2:The song called "Little Boxes" is exactly how I feel about life...those that know me, know that this is the common theme that runs through my head, and I am always in the search of the answer to why this must be. Any Ideas?

Flight 04-10-08

I went flying yesterday....it was tuuurbuuulent! The plane was fluctuating 100 feet up and down sometimes. Not instantaneous altitude changes, but large updrafts and downdrafts. This is caused by our geography often when there is a steep pressure gradient. As the wind blows from West to East, the air hits the mountains and then is quickly forced upwards. It then tumbles, imagine water hitting a boulder in a river, over and then oscillates for sometimes hundreds of miles if there is a strong inversion. If there is not a large inversion it is not quite so pronounced, but will still affect you when you are within ten miles of the mountain range.
We practiced short/soft field landing/takeoffs. We practiced them a few times in Preston, Idaho. The runway there is a little wider than one car lane, so that made it exciting especially with the wind. Preston was also the source of one of the scariest moments I have had flying too, before my mission a few years ago. Than we practiced some power on/off stalls which went pretty well. I am still a little stiff on getting my gear up and flaps in when recovering from the stall, but since I am flying an unfamiliar airplane, that is to be expected for a few more hours.
We then practiced an emergency gear extension. I thought it was interesting. This was the first time I have done this maneuver and when you put down the emergency extension lever you have to yaw back and forth so it gives a nice horizontal G-force. This is to make sure the gear clicks all the way down.
The last thing was a emergency engine failure. I do not have the checklist for that one memorized yet, but by next time I will. I guess I almost do now....pitch for 105 mph., choose a landing site, fuel pump on, change fuel tanks, mixture rich, props full forward, full throttle, check magnetos to make sure it is set on both. Those are always fun because we usually get down to just about 500 ft. above a field and line up as if we are going to land. I often wonder what the farmers are thinking. I guess that is about all that I remember from the flight.

For those of you who care!

So I was listening to the radio today and I learned why the housing mess came around. I found this interesting and thought that I would write about it just in case anyone else wanted to know.

First of all there are the primary buyers of mortgages. These are the people that first give the loans. To specify the ones that are a problem, I am reminded of a sign in front of a car dealership in downtown Cleveland. It said, "We want good people with bad credit!" These lenders are the primary buyers. I will apply it to houses now. Those that offer those easy loans are salesmen who are getting a quick buck on commission. They do not have to worry about you paying off any loan because they turn around and sell it to a secondary buyer. (When I say you, I am talking about people that get loans in this situation so don't take it personally.) This secondary buyer is willing to buy the loan from the primary buyer because they are willing to take the risk that even if you are not able to pay off your mortgage, by the time you default, the value of your house will have gone up. They get the house back and they resell another loan worth more money. No one wanted to admit there would ever be a cap on how high that value would be. Let me give a clear example of this and I will be done. You go to the easy lender and want a loan for your $200,000 home. They give you the loan. Over the life of the loan lets say you would end up paying $225,000. (I am not going to do actual interest math here for the sake of effort.) So the primary buyer sells off your loan to someone else for lets say $210,000. They just made a quick $10,000, and the secondary buyer will make $15,000. Then let's say you default. You have to give the house back...this is obviously the worst case scenario for all parties...sort of. Then the secondary buyer puts the house back on the market, but taadaa the house is now worth $250,000. Now they can loan out that amount and have the potential to pull in maybe $275,000. This process continues until houses are way overvalued and then the crash and burn. Get the picture....good now you know.

Youtube is my downfall....

I have a serious addiction to Youtube. I guess they say that admitting you have the problem is the first step. At least everyone that checks in here can know the source to come and find the best of...
But seriously I might post too many of them here. So just don't watch anymore if you get tired of them.

P.S. I am just excited to have a son or daugter so that I can force him/her to do things like this so that he/she can look cool and I can live vicariously through him/her. For those of you that are worried....I am kidding, obviously, if I was really going to do that do you think I would even talk about it on here.

Snails Are Slow So Was The Day

I was so frustrated today. It just seemed to go so slow. I skipped my Human Factors class too which added more time for me to just sit around. I get bored in that class because it seems like the teacher did his research for the class one time in 1994 and that was the last time. Everything he uses is from 1994. First of all, airplanes are a little different since then, and so is our understanding of safety issues. I am not sure if he knows that it has been 14 years or not. So some of the things that he has us do seem very outdated.

P.S. the icon for the 123teachme.com is pretty cool. I am trying to learn Spanish and I have been studying for about a half hour every day for about a week now. It is exciting. I don't know why I want to learn, it just feels like it could be my next big step in knowledge. I am supposed to shout out to Gifford here so here is my story that only he will remember. He and a couple other people that were there at the time. We went out to eat and I told him a story about when my family went to Puerto Vallarta. When I said the name of the city, I said it with a very heavy accent. It just sort of came out that way. He made fun of me for awhile, so now I am learning the language so that I have an excust to say Spanish words with the correct accent. There Gifford I still remember when you mocked me, is this what you wanted? Oh yeah and you are cool....I know that is what you wanted.

Physics

I got my physics test back today...............101%. I did not expect this, but I won't argue. I now officially have an A. Also, if you are interested, from applying physics that I have learned and a bunch of the formulas I have seen I figured out how your snowboard or skis slide down the hill so well. I won't bore you with the math, but essentially your snowboard or skis heat a small layer of ice to water and this gives you the sliding. The friction of the H2O and the material of your snowboark/skis heats it. When I say heat, this is relative because the small layer of water will only be 0 degrees C because all the work goes into the latent heat of the fusion of ice. Latent heat of the fusion of ice means that the work done goes into changing the state of H20 and not changing the temperature. This means that water will never heat above 0 degrees C unless all the ice is gone. The coefficient of heat of water is small which means it takes a small amount of work (friction) to heat this layer. I have gone through the math out of curiousity, but like I said I will not bore you despite the fact that I just did.

see the resemblance?

This is Becoming Too Much

So when Nate and I decided to do this whole blog thing - I really thought we would do like one post and then that'd be it. Well - I was very wrong. Nate and I spent like an hour or 2 this morning trying to figure out how to do that stinkin' slide show thing. THEN we spent more time on our playlist. I never thought this would take over our LIVES!!!

Yesterday Nate bought me a Nintendo DS. I bought this game for it but I'm stuck and can't figure it out. I'm going to buy a PDA program to put on it so I can use it as a tax write-off for my Mary Kay business. Good idea, eh?

Other than that...my day will consist of phone calls, cleaning, and blogging most likely. Here's a couple picures of Nate and I in florida over spring break.

Nate and I at dinner

Nate in the Astronaut Museum

I flew in Portland today!

I was really frustrated today when I got to Physics 1800 only to find out that my exam was not yet graded and I have to wait yet another day to see the results. Lame, Lame, Lame. There is nothing worse than waiting for results to an exam. I would rather take two exams in a row to get my test score right away than take one and wait for a week to get my score. I am currently hanging onto an 85% in the class but my last test was a 94% so I hope that I can get close to that to get my score up. Then we will have one more test, which is not cumulative, and I will have a chance to still get an A out of the class. One can only hope! My professor and I have been having a friendly dispute over Global Warming. He is driven by it, and I disagree with its validity. Strangely it has been friendly enough that it has actually turned into a positive experience for both of us. I think we have compromised our feelings toward the issue. Our fanatical urges have been brought more to the middle on the subject as we have discussed it.

Portland was cool....except it was on Flight Simulator. I did play multi player and flew some autopilot ILS approaches to Runway 11 with a tower controller guiding me in. So it was realistic and I excuse playing computer games by telling myself that it is training for school. It is and it isn't at the same time, but that is what I did after school for a bit. I then watched TV for awhile and then shortly after went to sleep to get ready for my graveyard shift, where I am sitting now. Now I am trying to motivate myself to do some market research for Entrepreneurship class. I need to find out what the markets are like for nutritional supplements. We are researching a company that would make custom nutrition/health bars, which was my idea. We then have to decide if the company is actually feasible or not.

Nate

P.S. Fashion tip for women.....
Subject: Teasing Hair
When you tease your hair, and you try to get more volume....make sure that the area that you are pulling your hair from still covers your scalp when you are done. When there is so much volume that you can see that little white scalp underneath....'tis not attractive. -Thank You for Your Compliance!

This is fine...no scalp exposed!

Recommended! This is very very enlightening!

This will teach you how to stand up for good principles. I know it is long, but it is worth watching. If you watch the first five minutes you will be hooked.

Grocery Shopping?!

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to go grocery shopping and make everything you buy LAST so you don't have to go every single week? I guess maybe I'm a bad wife but I can't figure out how to get substantial food around here! It's like I have to go to the store every single time I want to cook something. Anyways...I just need some advice...even though I feel like I should have had enough by now. So to any of you mothers or wives out there - please tell me how to feed my husband...

VOTE!

If you look off to your right, you'll see that I posted a poll so you all can vote on what Nate should focus his new blog on. Please take the time to vote! He would really appreciate it :)

Snow in April...

I don't really know how i feel about snow in April. It snowed this morning here in Logan. and it snowed yesterday in Ogden. Doesn't seem normal OR fun to me. I think it's time for it to stop. It can keep snowing up in the mountains so we get a lot of water down in the valley - as long as it's 75 in the valley I don't care how much it snows up there.

So those are my 2 cents worth for this morning. Nate's a better blogger than me, you'll all find that out soon enough. and PLEASE give him blogging ideas for the blog he wants to start. He would really appreciate it.

The Thing And The Glaven

I love to blog....I also want to have a personal blog. I know it is kind of dorky, but I am pretty serious about having a serious blog. Something that I will be able to bring in some small income from advertising. It can be done with enough determination. The problem is that I have a problem. I can't figure out for the life of me what the subject material of my blog will be. If you have any ideas please comment and let me know.
Conference was great! My favorite is always Elder Holland. He is so powerful and is not afraid to tell it like it is, and for all of those who know me....neither am I. This subject has stuck out to me lately because of my vast interest in politics and feeling that I have to speak up and help those that have the same feelings I do. I have wondered the balance between accepting the way people want to be and then not being a push over either. One sentence stuck out to me more than any other during conference. It was given by President Monson. In the priesthood session he said, and I don't remember word for word, often the worst sin of today is hidden in the halloween mask of tolerance. I realized that although I need to love my brothers and sisters, I still have the responsibilities to stand up for what is right, and not be tollerant of people's decisions, only for tolerances sake. I would also love feedback on this issue as to what others out there may think about that balance. Well, hope this blog finds you well. Goodnight.

Nate

Introducing...The Haslams!

So, we were told by Nate's cousin, April, to start blogging about our family. Personally, I thought it was a great idea so I've decided to give it a shot. Mostly we'll blog about school and life, trips...etc...and we'll try to keep it exciting for all of you who will be reading it! Oh! And we'll for sure post pictures! That should keep things entertaining, and it's a great excuse for me to take more!

Let's start out this blog with some exciting news.

Dianna just quit Wal-Mart!!!!!!

I know that might not seem exciting to everyone...but anyone who knows us will for sure understand how happy it makes me that I don't work there anymore. You know when you finish writing a 15 page paper that took you like 2 months?? It felt 10 times better than that. It might've been better than graduating from high school. Yeah - I'm pretty sure it was.

(I haven't quite figured out how to upload videos yet - but here's a good one that expresses my latest feelings)

Welp - I've got a huge math test tomorrow at 7:30 so I think its time for us to hit the sack. Hopefully I can keep up on this "blogging" thing - I've never tried it before so we'll see how it goes.

Goodnight!

-dianna
